There is a threat of oil spills since there is a lack of knowledge about what to do when one occurs. The threat is world wide and it is costly for both the environment and the companies involved when an oil spill occurs.

The starting point of the two day seminar was based on “what would happen if an oil spill would occur in the Baltic Sea”. This question created a seminar on environmental protection by the inventor and captain Claes Olofsson and Kalmar Marine Academy. The first day the seminar was held indoors at the academy in Kalmar and the participants attended various lectures. The introduction was given by Roger Kaliff from Swedish Club and other lectures were given by for example the Swedish Coast Guard, Wallenius, SMHI (Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) and P&I Insurance.

The second day was held at the civil protection training area nearby Kalmar airport. The facility is newly built and the participants could simulate a real oil spill. The participants of the seminar took part in an environmental clean-up with different scenarios and used the most modern cleaning equipment. Each participant was at the end of the second day awarded a training certificate in oil recovery and cleaning by Kalmar Maritime Academy.
